About
Penjamin is a slang term used to refer to an electronic marijuana vaporizer or vape. The word is likely a play on the term "Benjamin," which is sometimes used to refer to $100 bills, and how weed vaporizers are sometimes called "pens." The term "penjamin" was popularized among teenagers in the early 2020s, with some early uses being traced to X / Twitter as early as 2019.
Origin
The earliest known use of the term "penjamin" online is a post on X[1] by @youngfishgod on September 2nd, 2019, that reads, "Just hit the penjamin franklin n I canโt stop eating out of the fridge." The post gathered over 100 likes in five years (seen below).
Spread
The word "Penjamin" was added to Urban Dictionary[2] on January 6th, 2021 (seen below).
Use of the slang term "penjamin" grew exponentially after Fulcrum began to use the term repeatedly starting in late 2022.
The YouTuber[3] used the term "Penjamin" in an October 10th, 2022, YouTube video, saying that he was going to go to "double penjamin city" and also that he was going to "take my first smackington off the penjamin." The video gathered over 800,000 views in two years (seen below).

On January 7th, 2023, X[4] user @onehandpolitics posted a clip showing a politician hitting an electronic vaporizer. The post was captioned, "THE PENJAMIN?? IN THE HOUSE CHAMBER! ๐ฅ๐ฎโ๐จ ," gathering over 50,000 likes in a year (seen below).

An August 17th, 2023, TikTok[5] posted by @that.toothgap.girlll read, "pov: older brother's penjamin." The video showed a girl with blank red eyes โ the implication being that her older brother's weed pen was stronger than she had expected it to be. The post gathered over 8 million plays and 700,000 likes in five months (seen below, left).
A November 6th post by TikToker[6] @hooahyesyes in which she mimics coughing from hitting her "penjamin" gathered over 13 million plays and 1 million likes in three months (seen below, right).
