People Who Be DESPERATE for Attention refers to a viral video originally posted by TikToker Kam Edwards in which he plays a guy sighing loudly, trying to get the attention of his friends. The original video was posted in 2023 and it became a reaction video on Twitter / X and elsewhere going into 2024. It was commonly used in quotes to dunk on people who seemed to be trying too hard to receive attention akin to bait and engagement bait.
Origin
On September 27th, 2023, TikToker[1] Kam Edwards (@kamedwards_) posted a video skit called, "People who be DESPERATE for attention," in which he played a guy who wants attention from his friends and tries too hard to get it. At the video's 17-second mark, the character is seen sighing. Over 11 months, the video received roughly 85,800 plays and 7,800 likes (shown below).
Also on September 27th, Edwards posted the video to his Instagram[2] where it received over 29,200 views.

Currently, the first known memetic usage of the video was shared by X[3] user @Barseiona on January 15th, 2024, captioned, "people tweeting about 'nba' while playoffs are on," gaining over 1,500 views in seven months (shown below).

On January 30th, 2024, X[4] user @splitteraces used @Barseiona's video for a post that received over 108,300 views and 200 likes in seven months. Viral iterations surfaced soon after, like one shared by X[5] user @OJSIMPS0NBURNER on February 1st, captioned, "Football accounts tweeting about how the World Cup has more viewers than the Super Bowl On Super Bowl Day," receiving over 1,000 likes in six months (shown below).

Later in 2024, the meme spread outside of NFL Twitter, evident in a quote shared by X[6] user @_RaymondNoodles on May 18th, that made fun of a person for saying that they don't like cheesecake, receiving over 15,000 likes in three months (shown below).

On August 7th, 2024, X[7] user @yom_ei quoted a post about rapper Drake dropping 100GB of unreleased content "on the same day I got my colonoscopy," earning over 31,000 likes in nine days (shown below).
