History
2011 Norway Attacks
On July 22nd, 2011, Anders Breivik committed two terrorist attacks in Oslo, Norway.[1] The first, a car bomb attack in Oslo's, government quarter Regjeringskvartalet, which killed eight people and injured 209 others. Less than two hours later, at a summer camp in Utøya in Tyrifjorden, Buskerud, Breivik, wearing a homemade police uniform, complete with forged identification, shot and killed 69 people and injured more than 100 others (map of locations below). In total, the attack claimed 77 people and injured more than 315. It was the deadliest attack in Norway since World War II.
Ahead of the attack, Breivik published a 1,500-word manifesto entitled "2083 – A European Declaration of Independence"[2] online. In the document, he blames feminism, Islam and immigration in Europe for the attack, calling them "cultural suicide."
On April 16th, 2012, Breivik's trial began. Less than six months later, on August 24th, 2012, Breivik was sentenced 21 years in prison, the maximum sentence in Norway.
On September 5th, 2018, Netflix premiered the film 22 July, a movie based on Breivik's attack (trailer below).[5]
Reputation
Breivik is known as one of the worst murderers, criminals and terrorists in Norweigan history. He has identified himself as a fascist and a Nazi, which has made a popular figure within white supremacist communities.
Connection to Christchurch Mosque Shooting
On March 15th, 2019, a post was submitted to 8chan's /pol/[3] board announcing a planned attack that would be livestreamed on New Zealand resident Brenton Tarrant's Facebook page (shown below). The post was accompanied by an illustration of an Australian Shitposter and links to his manifesto.[4]
That day, shootings took place at the Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand. The attacks were livestreamed by the shooter on Facebook, which showed the shooter entering a mosque while shooting a shotgun, before switching to an assault rifle and shooting people inside. During portions of the stream, the songs "Remove Kebab" and the Initial D song "Gas Gas Gas" could be heard playing in the background.
In the manifesto shared on 8chan prior to the shooting, the author professes to be an "eco-fascist," discussing the "great replacement" right-wing conspiracy theory and cites Turning Point USA's Candance Owens as an inspiration before also claiming the game Spyro the Dragon 3 taught him "ethno-nationalism" and that Fortnite taught him "to floss on the corpses of my enemies."
In the manifesto, Brenton Tarrant claimed to have been in contact with Breivik and received a blessing from the terrorist. He writes: "But I just had a brief contact with Knight Justiciar Breivik, and received a blessing for my mission after contacting his knights."
The document continues: "I have read writings by ["2015 Charleston Church Shooting assailant":/memes/events/2015-charleston-church-shooting] Dylann Roof and many others, but the one I really picked up from was Knight Justiciar Breivik."
However, Breivik's lawyer Øystein Storrvik told the media that the contact did not seem likely because his client only has contact with professional actors such as prison officers, prison priests, psychiatrists and their lawyers." Breivik does not have contact with other inmates, let alone those outside the prison. He said, "He has very limited contact with the outside world, so it seems unlikely that he has had contact from the reality I know. Breivik is in practice cut off from the outside world."[6][7]
