About

Ashton Nicole Casey, better known as Ashnikko, is a London-based singer, songwriter and rapper who rose to gained widespread recognition with her 2019 single "STUPID" that became viral on TikTok in September 2019.

Online History

In July 2016, London-based musician Ashnikko released her first song "Krokodil" on SoundCloud,[1] releasing her first EP Sass Pancakes in 2017. Ashnikko did not achieve viral success the release of her third EP Hi, It's Me in July 2019.[2] On June 12th, 2019, Ashnikko[3] released the track "STUPID" as a second single from the EP on Soundcloud.

In September 2020, the song gained popularity on TikTok,[4] reaching viral popularity on Soundcloud that month. As of October 31st, 2019, the song accumulated over 1.5 million streams and 46,700 likes on Soundcloud, reaching over 7.7 million streams and 131,000 likes as of December 29th, 2020.



On October 18th, 2019, Genius released[5] a "Verified" episode about "STUPID" that received over 6.3 million views in one year (shown below, left). On October 22nd, Ashnikko[6] release a music video for "STUPID" that accumulated over 47.8 million views in one year (shown below, right).



Following the viral success of "STUPID," Ashnikko's music gained widespread recognition online. In early 2020, Ashnikko co-wrote the song "Boss Bitch" for American singer Doja Cat that was featured on the Birds of Prey soundtrack.[7] In 2020, Ashnikko's released singles "Cry"[8] and "Daisy"[9] (music videos shown below, left and right), the latter of which received viral popularity on social media. On August 7th, 2020, a music video for "Daisy" was released,[10] gaining over 65 million views on YouTube in four months.



On December 11th, 2020, a remix of "Daisy" featuring Japanese vocaloid Hatsune Miku was released.

Ashnikko has an active presence on social media platforms with profiles on TikTok[12] (1.8 million followers as of December 29th, 2020), Instagram[13] (856,000 followers) and Twitter[14] (96,300 followers).

Reputation

Ashnikko's musical style has been described by critics as a fusion of several genres and has most often been categorized as bubblegum pop and bubblegum punk.

I wrote it down the other day, it’s angry, punk, hip-hop, sad-girl-feminist, bubblegum, poo-poo music. It’s a lot of things. I find it really hard to stick to one thing because I’m so fickle and I like to change my mind a lot.[15]

In an April 2020 interview with NME,[15] Ashnikko described herself as a feminist, revealing that she "did a lot of her personal education into what intersectional feminism is on Tumblr."

Personal Life

Ashton Nicole Casey was born on February 19th, 1996 in Oak Ridge, North Carolina and spent her childhood years in the city of Greensboro.[11] As a teenager, Ashnikko moved to Riga, Latvia with her family. At the age of 18th, Ashnikko moved to London, England to live on her own.

Ashnikko cited M.I.A, Gwen Stefani, Lil Kim, Björk, Paramore among her musical influences.[11] Additionally, she listed Doja Cat, Grimes, Tierra Whack, Rico Nasty, Princess Nokia and others among those she considers her musical "peers."

Ashnikko's "Stupid"

Ashnikko's 'Stupid' is a single released in July 2019 by American-born rapper Ashnikko. The track which is the off the artist's third album "Hi, It's Me" gained notoriety through its common usage in TikTok videos. Many compared the song's rise to fame to Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road".
