Shang Abi, also known as Buff Chinese Guy, is a muscular content creator who grew popular on Chinese and western social media for a series of videos in which he dances to the same techno song in different, flamboyant outfits.

History

Abi first grew popular on Douyin, the Chinese equivalent to TikTok, using the handle @LXXbig. His earliest extant video was posted on May 13th, 2019.^[1] On May 19th, 2020, he posted the first of what would become his most popular type of video.^[2] It shows him eating in a restaurant when a techno remix of the song "Có Chàng Trai Viết Lên Cây," comes on, prompting him to dance. The video gained over 60 million views on Douyin. He has posted several similar videos on the platform, gaining view counts in the millions for each (compilations shown below).

Online Presence

As Of October 26th, 2021, Shang has over 295 million followers on Douyin.^[3] Outside of Douyin, he has gained a significant presence on YouTube. On February 1st, 2021, YouTuber Joeybtoonz posted a video doing a sarcastic "review" of Shang's content, gaining over 1 million views (shown below, left). On October 25th, Lessons In Meme Culture posted a more straightforward review of Abi, gaining over 188,000 views in one day (shown below, right).
