About
Pixel Stretch Trend refers to a viral photo-editing trend that resurfaced sometime in June 2026, having initially gained virality in 2008. The photography trend involves stretching a slice of pixels from a photograph in photo manipulation software such as Photoshop to create a dynamic sense of motion. As the art trend spread in mid-2026, social media users posted examples ranging from vehicles to landscapes and more, typically using bright colors in waves or bands pulled out from subjects in the images.
Origins
According to the publication Digital Camera World, the trend initially manifested sometime in 2008 before experiencing a minor resurgence around 2022.[1]
On January 7th, 2022, the YouTube channel Envato Tuts+ uploaded a guide video explaining how to create a pixel stretch image in Photoshop, garnering over 41,000 views, 1,100 likes and 15 comments in four years.
Though no one photographer or content creator can be attributed with facilitating the latest revival of the trend, photos edited with the pixel stretch technique began proliferating social media platforms like TikTok and Reddit in early June 2026, particularly in car-centric photography spaces.
For example, on June 5th, 2026, Redditor GregoryParmentier posted an edit to the /r/Motorsportphotography[2] subreddit, which gained nearly 400 upvotes in about 20 days.
