Origin

On May 11th, 2019, Redditor scythE-shanty posted the first known iteration of the macro to r/dankmemes^[1] (shown below), with the statue pointing to a Mematic watermark. The image amassed over 31,000 upvotes in one day.

Spread

Later the same day, Redditor PJChloupek submitted another version of the image macro to the same subreddit (shown below), this time utilizing the vote counter below the image, which is only in that position on the mobile version of Reddit. The post received over 74,000 upvotes in one day. ^[2]

By May 12th, the macro had spread to r/memes. Some submissions to r/memes include the images shown below posted by Redditors Strunkl_Toast and borna3808. The posts received over 29,000 and 57,000 upvotes respectively. ^[3][4]
