Ranni the Witch is an NPC in the 2022 RPG Elden Ring depicted as a blueish-tinted woman with a large witch's hat, a white dress and a scar across her right eye. The character became popularized among the game's player base for her design, inspiring a wave of fan art and memes in early 2022.
Origin
Ranni the Witch is one of the first NPCs players can encounter in FromtSoftware's Elden Ring,[1] released on February 25th, 2022. If they so choose, players can engage in a questline for Ranni that, if completed, offers players access to one of the game's endings. Ranni's character design is depicted as a four-armed blue witch with a large hat and flowing cloak.
Spread
Ranni became a quick favorite among players of Elden Ring and was soon the subject of fan art upon release. On March 6th, 2022, Twitter user organ70[2] posted art of the character next to the doll from Bloodborne, gaining over 12,000 retweets and 39,000 likes in 10 days (shown below, left). That same day, user @Mephist0216[3] posted art that gained over 19,000 retweets and 95,000 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
The character was also the subject of memes in March 2022. For example, on March 13th, Twitter user @K31TH_W1nt3r5[4] posted a WikiHow parody about a portion of Ranni's questline (shown below, left). On March 5th, Twitter user @HuffsLove[5] posted a humorous piece of fan art of small Ranni, gaining over 1,000 retweets and 6,700 likes (shown below, right).
