Recoil is an internet slang term referring to the way a woman's butt shakes after she jumps, twerks or makes a movement involving her legs. If there is significant shaking of the butt, a woman is considered to have good recoil. While recoil most often refers to the butt, it is also commonly used in reference to breasts. The term has been used since around late 2021 and was popularized on TikTok throughout 2022.

Origin

The term "recoil" was first defined on Urban Dictionary^[1] on November 19th, 2021 by Fxidjfcucixjngcjj, writing, "When a girls ass shakes after jumping or any activity involving Movement of the legs," garnering over 90 upvotes in a year. The example reads, "Yo did you see that girl on tik tok She had hella recoil." It is unclear who coined the term.

One of the earliest popular known videos to use the term was uploaded to TikTok^[2] by @taylorfeingold on January 25th, 2022, where she jokes about how people always point out her recoil in video, garnering over 8 million views in 11 months (shown below).

Spread

The term became increasingly popular on TikTok over the course of 2022, also spreading to other sites like Twitter. The term is often used in reference to videos showcasing women with recoil and is commonly used as a hashtag on TikTok. On May 30th, 2022, TikToker^[3] @oopsrejected posted a video dancing with someone, garnering over 970,000 views in seven months (shown below, left). On June 1st, she responded to a commenter via video^[4] writing, "yo that recoil," responding with excitement about the comment, garnering over 2 million views in six months (shown below, right).

On December 27th, TikToker^[5] @sweateuncle posted a duet to a video of Billie Elish where her breast recoils in a specific way, responding to the comment, "I searched Billie Eilish recoil what's this," garnering over 2 million views in a day (shown below).
