Rodney Dangerfield One-Liner Parodies refers to jokes on social media that imitate the self-deprecating style of American stand-up comedian Rodney Dangerfield and are commonly paired with an image of Dangerfield delivering a joke. Spawned by a 2021 viral post about the movie Dune and largely popularized by writer Ben Rosen, the format achieved significant presence on X / Twitter in 2023.

Origin

The format imitates the style of the American stand-up comedian Rodney Dangerfield, known for his self-deprecating humor, his one-liners and his catchphrase, "I don't get no respect!" (compilation video shown below).



On November 1st, 2021, X[1] / Twitter user @brianchaley posted a still image of Dangerfield during a stand-up routine captioned with a joke referencing Dune and written in Dangerfield's signature style. The post (shown below) garnered over 3,000 reposts and 31,000 likes in two years.

Prior to 2023, several similar memes imitating Rodney Dangerfield's stand-up jokes went viral online, most notably several posts written by writer and X[2] user Ben Rosen (@ben_rosen). For example, on July 19th, 2022, the user posted a meme that garnered over 4,300 reposts and 51,000 likes in two years (shown below, left). On December 19th, the same user posted another meme that received over 1,300 reposts and 21,000 likes on X[3] in one year (shown below, right).

The format achieved more spread in 2023, primarily on X, with other users joining in on the trend. On June 6th, 2023, X user @brianthehuman posted a since-deleted meme about the SAG-AFTRA strike. On June 6th, Tumblr[4] user radiofreederry posted a screenshot of the tweet, with the post garnering over 19,900 likes and reblogs in six months (shown below, left).

On November 29th, 2023, X[5] user @YourMajestyVee posted a meme referencing the death of Henry Kissinger coinciding with the 2023 Spotify Wrapped release. The post (shown below, right) received over 6,700 reposts and 35,000 likes in one month.
