Sad Gaming Cat, also known as Cat On Xbox, is a reaction image depicting a kitten holding an Xbox 360 controller on a couch. Two versions of the meme exist, with one unedited and another photoshopped to include the face from the Crying Cat meme. Both of these versions typically revolve around various aspects of gaming, especially online, where people are insulting the meme’s creator or the cat itself. The photo can also commonly be seen as an image macro with text on the top and bottom.

Origin

The photo used in both of these memes originally comes from a post on the site Cutest Paw^[1] by user Jonathan Cruz (seen below). The image, titled, “My friend’s kitten chilling with some xbox,” was uploaded on November 25th, 2012, depicting a kitten with its paws placed on top of an Xbox 360 controller while a man lounges behind it wearing a yellow Space Invaders shirt.

Spread

According to a reverse image search on Tineye,^[2] the first meme using the photo (shown below) was posted to the now-deleted website Funsted.com on February 16th, 2013. Though this meme has since been spread widely around the web, it was first uploaded there.

On July 28th, 2013, Memecenter^[3] user cuteasfuck uploaded another image macro variant of the meme under the title, “So That's Who It Is.” The meme (seen below) received 1,803 likes and 32 comments.

The first time the photoshopped version of the meme featuring the face of Crying Cat appears online comes from a post by Redditor^[4] bazang_ on June 10th, 2019, to the r/sadcats sub. The meme (seen below) received over 1,400 upvotes and 20 comments.

On August 4th, 2019, a since-deleted Redditor^[5] posted another version to the r/dankmemes sub. The post (shown below) was upvoted over 103,000 times, commented on 500 times and gifted several Reddit awards.

On August 19th, 2019, Redditor^[6] Haaisee posted another example of Sad Gaming Cat to r/Gaming under the title, “I’ll be missing you.” This meme (seen below) received over 78,000 upvotes, 953 comments and a few Reddit awards.

Imgur^[7] user peddlerofmemes can be seen uploading a variant (shown below) on September 25th, 2019, receiving nearly 85,000 views, 2,200 points and 244 comments.
