Shampoo Bottle in the Shower refers to a series of image macro and reaction memes that express the sound, feeling and experience of a shampoo bottle falling while someone is in the shower.
Origin
While it's likely that jokes about shampoo bottles falling the shower have existed prior to their online relevance, the earliest known meme to joke about the volume of a bottle fall was posted by Redditor [1] watagaein7. On May 25th, 2017, they posted a "Noise Level" meme, which included "a shampoo bottle falling off the ledge in the shower" as the loudest. The post received more than 2,000 points (97% upvoted) and 30 comments in two years (shown below).
Precursor
Prior to jokes about the bottle falling, jokes about leaving empty shampoo bottles in the shower also had some brief online popularity in the 2010s. For example, in 2012, MemeCenter [2] user serkan posted an Advice Animals meme that reads, "Shampoo Bottle Empty / Put In Shampoo Graveyard in Corner of Shower" (shown below).
Spread
On April 7th, 2019, Twitter [3] user @leom0rales tweeted a mock conversation between himself and his mother after the bottle falls. The post received more than 150,000 likes and 48,000 retweets in four months (shown below, left).
Several weeks later on May 1st, Redditor [4] SorestChimp posted an image of a military paratrooper exiting an aircraft. They captioned the post, "My shampoo bottle while I'm taking a shower." The post received more than 30,000 points (96% upvoted) and 170 comments in three months (shown below, center).
ON June 10th, Redditor[5] posted a variation using an image from the video game Assassin's Creed. Within two months, the image received more than 3,600 points (98% upvoted) and 20 comments (shown below, right).
On June 14th, Twitter user @sweetbread55 posted a video of the meme. The post received more than 360,000 likes and 111,000 retweets in less than two months (shown below).
