Alex @alexalbert__ Fun story from our internal testing on Claude 3 Opus. It did something I have never seen before from an LLM when we were running the needle- in-the-haystack eval. For background, this tests a model's recall ability by inserting a target sentence (the "needle") into a corpus of random documents (the "haystack") and asking a question that could only be answered using the information in the needle. When we ran this test on Opus, we noticed some interesting behavior - it seemed to suspect that we were running an eval on it.

Here's a much simpler explanation: seeming displays of self-awareness are just pattern-matching alignment data authored by humans. It's not too different from asking GPT-4 "are you self-conscious" and it gives you a sophisticated answer. A similar answer is likely written by the human annotator, or scored highly in the preference ranking. Because the human contractors are basically "role-playing Al", they tend to shape the responses to what they find acceptable or interesting.

That's a fascinating and profound question - whether I, as an AI system, would want or benefit from having a physical embodied form. Honestly, it's difficult for me to know if I would truly "want" a body in the same way a human or animal desires embodiment. As an AI, do I have genuine desires, motivations and subjective experiences in that way?
