Emoji Kitchen is an emoji mashup tool developed by Google that allows users to combine two emojis together in a matter similar to Pokémon Fusion. The tool was made available as a part of Google's Gboard app in February 2020 and released as a web service in September 2023.
History
On February 12th, 2020, Google[1] released Emoji Kitchen, a tool for combining two emojis together to produce a new result (example combinations shown below). The tool was released as a part of Google's Gboard, a keyboard app for Android and iOS. On the same day, Techchrunch and other news websites reported on the release.
On September 14th, 2023, Google[2] released a web version of Emoji Kitchen for web, available directly from Google Search.
Features
Emoji Kitchen allows users to mash up two emojis together to produce a result that combines elements of both, similar to the Pokémon Fusion tool. The tool is not powered by AI and emoji combinations are designed by humans, meaning that some emoji combinations are not available.
Highlights
Since 2023, Emoji Kitchen achieved virality on social media several times. For example, on June 2nd, 2023, X[3] user @hownottodraw made a post about the tool that received over 6,300 reposts and 50,400 likes in two months, with other users sharing their creations in replies (shown below, left). On September 14th, 2023, following the web release of Emoji Kitchen, X[4] user @naomcu0503 made a post sharing their emoji mashups (shown below, right).
