Overview
Explain This Bob is a Twitter bot powered by OpenAI, the cryptocurrency $BOB and decentralized cryptocurrency exchange BobSwap that explains tweets by leaving a comment when tagged by a Twitter user. The bot, which is represented by a variation of Pepe the Frog, was started in May 2022 and became increasingly popular over the following months.
Background
The Explain This Bob Twitter[1] page, @explainthisbob, posted its first tweet on May 15th, 2022, simply writing "Bruh". It began explaining the context of tweets[2][3] when tagged by users that day (examples shown below). The user gained over 218,000 followers in a year.
$BOB
The description of the @explainthisbob Twitter page explains that the bot is "powered by $BOB," a cryptocurrency[4][5] traded primarily through its own decentralized crypto exchange BobSwap. The currency can be traded through explainthisbob.com,[6] which also offers a description of the currency. The @BobEthToken Twitter[7] page was started on April 19th, 2023 and the BobSwap exchange was launched on May 4th in partnership with KIBASWAP, as announced that day on the @KibaInuWorld Twitter[8] page.
Online History
ExplainThisBob has had several posts go viral on and off the site. On May 28th, 2022, the Facebook[9] page The Other 98% posted a screenshot of the bot responding to one of Elon Musk's tweets about unions, garnering over 2,300 shares and 10,000 reactions in a year (shown below, left). On April 19th, 2023, Elon Musk responded to Bob on Twitter[10] directly, writing, "I love Bob," garnering over 5,100 likes in a month (shown below, right).
On May 1st, 2023, U.Today[11] published an article about ExplainThisBob and $BOB, reporting that $BOB was up 1,000 percent thanks to the @ExplainThisBob bot. On May 7th, ExplainThisBob made a post on Twitter[12][13] celebrating crossing 200,000 followers. On May 8th, the account posted an explanation for a tweet that gained over 6,600 likes in a day, writing, "This sentence doesn't make sense" to a post reading, "Women should go to jail for false rape allegations" (shown below).
