About
Smash or Pass AI or SmashOrPassAI is billed as a "generative AI party game" in which a user judges a series of AI-generated photographs of non-existent women, and rates them as either smash or pass. Eventually, the artificial intelligence appears to learn a user's preferences and generates images of women they will find attractive. Upon the site's release, it was mocked and widely made fun of on X, with many posting parodies and critiques.
History
On September 2nd, 2023, developer Emmet Halm teased a "degenerate idea" in a post on X [1][2] that received just over forty likes in the course of three days after first being posted on September 2nd, 2023 (seen below left). Just hours later, he tweeted a link to the website for Smash or Pass, which received over 1,500 likes in the next three days (seen below right).
Word about the website spread over the next few days mostly through parodies. For example, the post seen below left, by @ronawang on X,[3] earned over 5,400 likes in a little over a day on September 4th, garnering significantly more attention than the original. Wang also released her own site, FriendorFoeAI,[4] which was "designed to emulate the split-second decisions that women need to make." The post below right by Justine Moore received over 1,100 likes in a little less than a day on September 4th, referencing the "in the arena" meme from a week before, which was popular on tech and business Twitter.[5]
Following Wang's post, many other memes parodying the site circulated, with some accompanied by their own websites as well.[6]
Features
Smash or Pass AI is a generative model that promises to learn a user's preferences based on their choices and then optimize the selection of AI-generated women it renders. Halm promised on September 2nd that "the more you swipe, the more it discovers your type."[3] In a September 2nd, 2023 tweet, Halm shared that the goal of Smash or Pass was to create a more sophisticated image-recommendation system, a technology that would be useful beyond just rating computer-generated faces and bodies.
The site itself has a minimal interface with a picture of a woman, two buttons, and the ability to save images and then access them later.

Smash or Pass
Smash or Pass is a slang phrase and challenge said to someone with accompanying information, often a picture or video of someone or something. The goal of the challenge is to say whether the participant would Smash, or pass, meaning would refuse intercourse if given the (usually highly unlikely) opportunity. Though often used as a time waster before the internet among friends, the game has advanced with the additional utility of online life.
