About
Slapping Cheese On Pokémon Fire Starters refers to jokes about the designs of recent fire-type Pokémon available to the player at the beginning of the game, particularly the designs of Scorbunny from Pokémon Sword and Shield and Fuecoco from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, both of which have a yellow square reminiscent of a Kraft Singles cheese slice featured prominently in their design. Memes noting this peculiarity appeared online in late February 2022 following the reveal of Scarlet and Violet.
Origin
On February 27th, 2022, The Pokémon Company surprised fans by revealing Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, showing the three starter Pokémon at the end of the trailer (shown below).
The red Pokémon Fuecoco was assumed to be a fire Pokémon, which are traditionally available at the start of all Pokémon games. User @poooptato[2] was the first Twitter user to note that the yellow patch on its design resembled a Kraft Single. Later that day, user Sioteru[3] noted that Scorbunny also featured a yellow patch resembling a Kraft American cheese slice, gaining over 60 retweets and 220 likes (shown below).
Spread
Later on February 27th, 2022, Twitter user @shedua[5] posted comparisons between Scorbunny and Fuecoco, circling the areas of their design with similar yellow patches, writing, "who keeps slapping kraft cheese on them! !!!" The tweet gained over 2,900 retweets and 60,000 likes (shown below, left). Later on February 27th, Twitter user @SharkTuna[4] posted fan art of the Scarlet and Violet protagonist throwing cheese onto Fuecoco, gaining over 360 retweets and 1,200 likes (shown below, right).
On February 28th, Twitter user @passionpeachy[1] observed that both Fuecoco and Scorbunny featured a yellow patch in their design, joking, "What sick fuck keeps slapping kraft singles onto the pokemon." The tweet helped the meme of Pokémon with cheese on them go viral, as it gained over 15,900 retweets and 123,000 likes in less than 14 hours (shown below). As @passionpeachy's tweet spread, more Twitter users created memes and fan art about cheese being applied to Pokémon. User @Z33N_ZEPPELI[6] replied to @passionpeachy with a GIF of a cheese slice being tossed onto a cat, gaining over 30 retweets and 960 likes (shown below, right).
