About

So I Tied An Onion To My Belt, Which Was The Style At The Time is an exploitable image taken from an episode of The Simpsons. Edits of the scene find Abe Simpson describing a mundane piece of trivia about the past.

Origin

The scene originated from The Simpsons episode Last Exit To Springfield, which first aired on March 11th, 1993.[1] In the episode, Homer and his union go on strike at the nuclear power plant. Meanwhile, Mr. Burns asks Smithers to "Hire strikebreakers, the kind they had in the 30's." The next scene shows a group of elderly men in uniforms, along with Abe Simpson who says "One trick is to tell them stories that don't go anywhere," and goes on a ramble about having to go to Morganville (Shelbyville) to get a heel replaced on his shoe, and says "So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time." before continuing his ramble (scene shown below).

Spread

The scene began seeing use in memes in Simpsons Shitposting groups across social media beginning in the early 2020s. One early version posted March 16th, 2021 Reddit's /r/simpsonsshitposting[2] by user shmutsy stylized the meme as an Advice Animal, gaining over 7,400 points in nearly two years (shown below, left). On April 9th, 2021, Facebook user Andy Kyriacou posted a parody to Simpsons Bortposting,[3] gaining over 2,700 reactions (shown below, right).

For example, on July 27th, 2022, Kyriacou posted another example in Simpsons Bortposting,[4] gaining over 3,600 reactions (shown below, left). On August 21st, Twitter user UlsterDoggo[5] posted a Girl Explaining meme referencing the scene, gaining over 6 retweets and 32 likes in two months (shown below, right).
