Herta Spinning also known as Kuru Kuru Kururin refers to fan art of the character Herta from Honkai Star Rail spinning around. The art was drawn by Seseren and is often associated with the Ending Theme music from Super Mario World, with Herta adding her own lyrics: "kuru kuru".
Origin
On April 23rd, 2023, the artist Seseren uploaded a fan art GIF of the character Herta from Honkai Star Rail spinning around to their Twitter / X[8] and Pixiv[9]. The post received 1,400 reposts and 5,700 likes, and more than 15,000 likes in ten months, respectively (shown below). A week later, the GIF was uploaded to other platform such as Bilibili[1].
At some point before May 10th, 2023, Facebook user Raphiiel uploaded a Honkai Star Rail gameplay edit using the GIF with the Super Mario World Ending Theme remixed with Herta voice saying "Kuru kuru". The post was removed. On May 10th, 2023, Facebook[2] page Paimon reposted the video. It received more than 6,200 reactions and 587 shares in nine months (shown below).
Spread
Starting in May of 2023, the edit grew popular among the Honkai Star Rail community. For example, on May 11th, 2023, YouTube[3] user Shiro uploaded the GIF of Herta spinning with the Super Mario World Ending Theme remix. The video received more than 4.9 million views in nine months (shown below, left). On May 13th, 2023, YouTube[4] user AoKidDesu uploaded a Bread Falling Over edit which showed Herta getting hit with falling bread. The video received more than 1.2 million views in nine months (shown below, right).
On May 15th, 2023, YouTube[5] user Mika uploaded a 10 Hour Version of Herta spinning that received more than 1.3 million views in nine months (shown below, left). On June 20th, 2023, YouTube[6] user x_Selistia uploaded a comparison video that claimed the "original" kuru-kuru is from the 2002 anime series Puru Puru Pururin . The video received more than 1.1 million views in eight months (shown below, right).
On May 21st, 2023, YouTube[7] user Raphiiel uploaded a video about how they made the first edit and Herta's voice remix. The video received more than 852,000 views in nine months (shown below).
