SpongeGar Realizes refers to a scene from SpongeBob SquarePants in which SpongeBob's prehistoric ancestor SpongeGar realizes that he can use a stick as a tool to take coral out of the fire. The scene has been used as source material for memes in video captioning, including edits in which SpongeBob is making a decision between two options.

Origin

Om November 5th, 2002, episode 54 "Ugh" (also known as "SpongeBob B.C.") of Season 3 of the animated series SpongeBob Squarepants premiered.[1] In the first part of the episode, SpongeBob's prehistoric ancestor SpongeGar realizes that he can use a stick to fish out hot corals out of the fire, with the scene (shown below) set to atonal singing of the barbershop quarter and referencing the Dawn of Man sequence from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.



Prior to October 2021, the scene saw minor presence in memes. primarily as a reaction image. For example, on June 15th, 2016, iFunny[2] user sweetpics404 shared an image macro based on the frame (shown below, left). On February 28th, 2019, Twitter[3] user @itakeyourlemons used the image for a "My Face When" meme that gained over 70 likes in three years (shown below, right). On January 31st, 2021, iFunny[4] user Xinity posted the earliest found video edit of the scene, a NSFW hornyposting Lady Dimitrescu meme that received over 60 smiles in one year.

On October 29th, 2021, Twitter[5] user @PoptartMan17 shared the full scene, with the post gaining over 1.3 million views, 7,100 retweets and 49,200 likes in six months (shown below).

@PotartMan17's tweet triggered the initial popularity of the scene in memes, as users on Twitter and iFunny used it as source material for video captions. For example, on October 31st, 2021, Twitter[6] user @macatron captioned the video, "A24 filmmaking," with the post gaining over 1,900 retweets and 10,200 likes in six months (shown below).

On November 1st, iFunny[7] user torain captioned thev video with a joke about Among Us. The post was featured on the app and received ovefr 31,100 likes in six months (shown below).



The format maintained moderate popularity in video captions in late 2021 and early 2022, particularly on iFunny.
