About
Kakegurui, also known as Kakegurui: Compulsive Gambler, is a manga series published by Square Enix. It has been adapted into both an anime and live-action television series. The series follows Hyakkao Academy, an elite private school where the social hierarchy is determined by one's ability to gamble, and Yumeko Jabami, a transfer student who proves to be highly adept at gambling and disturbs the order of the school.
History
Manga
The series was written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura.[1] It was published by Square Enix and first appeared in its Gangan Joker magazine on March 22nd, 2014. There have been twelve volumes of the manga and it is currently still in publication. Spinoff series set in the same universe include Kakegurui -Twin, Kakegurui (Kakkokari) and Kakegurui Midari.
Anime
An anime adaptation of the series illustrated by MAPPA debuted July 1st, 2017. The first season of 12 episodes ran from July 1st to September 23rd, 2017 in Japan, and was picked up by Netflix. There, the season debuted in 2018. A second season debuted in Japan in early 2019 and was released on Netflix on June 13th.[2]
Live-Action Series
The series received a live-action adaptation series debuted in Japan in January of 2018 and was available on Netflix shortly after. The series ran for two seasons and a total of fifteen episodes.[3] A full-length movie featuring the same actors was released in May of 2019.
Online Presence
The anime series has proven popular online, netting a score of 7.5 on myanimelist[4] and 7.2 on IMDb.[5] The series' subreddit, created June 14th, 2016, has over 9,100 subscribers.[6] In a negative review, Collider[7] wrote that while the series had strong points, its overt sexuality proved too creepy. YouTube channel Mother's Basement also gave the anime a negative review, gaining over 1.2 million views (shown below).
