Minecraft Dwellers refers to a series of Minecraft mods featuring a hostile entity that lurks in caves or in the forests. When the player sees it, a series of spooky events occur throughout the player's entire game, making the environment progressively darker. The mods gained particular popularity online on YouTube during 2023 and 2024, inspiring Let's Play videos about surviving the mod.

History

The first known Dweller mod was the "Cave Dweller"^[1] by Gargin, published on July 11th, 2023, on Curse forge. The Dweller chases and stalks the player throughout the cave using cave sounds. The mod garnered over 138k downloads in 6 months. On the same day, the creator of Cave Dweller uploaded a video on YouTube ^[2] in which he explains how he created the mod, garnering over 4.6 million views in 6 months (shown below).

Online Presence

Over the next several months, many users created their own versions of the Dwellers mod, inspired by Gargin's mod, with minor modifications. For example, on July 18th, 2023, user M_Productions^[3] published their mod of a Dweller that can break doors, garnering over 500k downloads in 5 months (shown below, left). On November 19th, 2023, user Pixel_Coder^[4] published "The One Who Watches" a Dweller that appears at night and if he sees you, he will try to spawn at you in a few minutes, garnering over 64k downloads in 2 months (shown below, right).

Let's Plays

Minecraft Dwellers is a prevalent game type in Minecraft Let's Play videos. The Let's Plays feature players trying to survive the Dwellers solo or with friends. For Example on November 29th, 2023, Youtuber ^[5] Vivilly posted a gameplay video in which he survives 6 Dwellers, gaining over 217k views in 1 month (shown below, left). On November 19th, 2023, YouTuber ^[6] Jamsteo posted a video in which he and his friends try to survive 5 dwellers, gaining over 522k views in 1 month (shown below, right).
