Overview

Pseudoregalia is a retro-inspired 3D platformer metroidvania video game produced by indie game developer Rittzler. The game, which has been compared to the Castlevania Nintendo 64 games, was created for the Metroidvania Month 19 Jam on Itch.io in March 2023 and won. It was given an official, extended release on Steam in July of that year. The game's popularity inspired numerous Let's Plays and reviews online, as well as fan art and content centered around its protagonist, an anthropomorphic bunny-goat-hybrid creature named Sybil.

History

On March 18th, 2023, Itch.io[1] user rittzler published a game titled Pseudoregalia to the site as an entry in the Metroidvania Month 19 Jam competition, also posting a gameplay video to YouTube[2] that day, garnering over 11,000 views in five months (shown below).

On July 28th, rittzler released an extended version of the game on Steam,[3] receiving over 1,900 reviews in three weeks.

Online Presence

On July 30th, 2023, YouTuber[4] Zhain Gaming posted a full playthrough of the game, garnering over 9,000 views in two weeks. On August 4th and 7th, YouTubrs[5][6] atsuover and Noisy Pixel posted reviews of the game, garnering over 24,000 and 5,200 views respectively in two weeks (shown below, left and right).

Fan Art / Content

As the game became increasingly popular throughout August 2023, people began posting fan art of the protagonist, Sybil, an anthropomorphic rabbit-like creature. On August 10th, 2023, X[7] user @Astronowo posted artwork that gained over 700 likes in five days (shown below, left). On August 13th, X[8] user @it_me_lui posted artwork that gained around 1,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).
