About

So I'm a Spider, So What? (Kumo desu ga, Nani ka?) is an isekai light novel series written by Okina Baba. The series focuses on an unnamed girl, nicknamed Kumoko by fans, reincarnated in a fantasy world after a space-time spell misfires and kills everyone in her school. While some of her other classmates are reincarnated as nobles and royalty, Kumoko becomes a weak spider but uses her pluckiness and human smarts to survive. The series was later adapted into an anime.

History

So I'm a Spider, So What ?, written by Okina Baba and illustrated by Tsukasa Kiryu, was first published as a novel series in Shōsetsuka ni Narō starting in 2015. A light novel series published by Fujimi Shobo started in December 2015, and a manga started shortly after.[1] Both the manga and light novel series have run consistently since first being published. On January 8th, 2021, the first episode of the anime adaptation, handled by Millepensee studio and streaming on Crunchyroll (trailer shown below).

Reception

The series has been widely praised by fans, particularly its handling of Kumoko who, unlike many anime characters, becomes powerful through her own efforts instead of an act of chance. The series has a score of 7.1/10 on MyAnimeList[2] and a 6.9 on IMDb.[3]

Online Presence

So I'm a Spider, So What? has developed a sizable internet following, particularly in the wake of the anime's release. A subreddit for the series, /r/kumodesu[4] launched on June 18th, 2018 and has gained over 11,000 subscribers as of March 2021. There is also a Wiki[1] for the show and a page on TV Tropes.[5]

A sizable amount of the fandom centers around the series' main character, "Kumoko." Much of the fan art for the series features her (examples shown below).
