About
Subway Surfers No Coin Speedrun refers to a social media challenge popularized on TikTok in May 2022, in which players of the mobile game Subway Surfers have to run as far as they can without getting a single coin. The video game became the most popular speedrunning game on Twitch on August 5th, 2022 after the challenge went viral with Brazilian gamers.
Origin
The mobile game Subway Surfers was released on May 23rd, 2012. It is an "infinite running" game in which a player attempts to get as far as they can without failing. These types of games are typically not allowed to be part of speedrunning, as game's are required to have an ending to them. In order to circumvent that, the game was uploaded with 'speedrun challenges' that create more rules, such as the popular "no coins challenge." According to the official Speedrun website[2], the first record of this challenge was uploaded on Twitch on June 23rd, 2018, by the Mexican Gion915.[3] The player was able to run for 0:53 seconds without getting a single coin.
Spread
The speedrun record by Gion915 was left unmatched for three years until the Russian player dphdmn[8], did a one-minute run without getting any coin or using a hoverboard trick on May 22nd, 2020 (Shown below).
Around early-May 2022, the game became very popular on TikTok. The website The Health Education [4] explains that “a recent trend sees users upload text-to-speech audio clips from Reddit threads Subway Surfers gameplay.”
Brazilian Speedrunners
Brazilians first started to post their records on the no coin challenge on social media, and starting in May 2022, uploads were seen on the official Speedrun[5] site about their accomplishments, such as the video below, posted by @otaldosilver on May 1st, 2022.

The increase in speedrun submissions occurred thanks to some Brazilian players sharing tutorials on TikTok that showed players how to break speedrun world records and publish them on the site. On May 16th, 2022, TikToker @lexakt_ posted a guide to help other _Subway Surfers _gamers and it reached 2.6 million views in four months (shown below).

Most of the runs come from Brazilian gamers, who have a majority of the submitted runs. Out of the top 200 runners in the no coins challenge (No Hoverboard/Keys) category, 64% are Brazilian accounts, and the rest have no nationality listed, “meaning the number of Brazil-based runners is likely even higher,” as Fanbyte[7] explained. As of August 6th, 2022, the number one speedrun player of the game in the no coins challenge (No Hoverboard/Keys) category is the Brazilian dedudo[8], with almost 8 minutes without getting a coin (shown below).
