About

Super Mario Maker 2 is a video game created by Nintendo, and the sequel to Super Mario Maker. It was directed by Yosuke Oshino and released for the Nintendo Switch. Like the previous game, Super Mario Maker 2 allows players to create 2D Super Mario levels using tools from the series, adding new features and assets that weren't available in the previous game.

History

Super Mario Maker 2 was first announced during the February 13th, 2019 Nintendo Direct (trailer shown below). A second Direct focused entirely on the upcoming game streamed on May 15th (shown below, right). Like the previous game, players can create levels based on assets from a specific game in the Super Mario franchise. These are Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U and Super Mario 3D World. Super Mario Maker 2 also features online and co-op modes, which had not been present in the previous game.[1] It also introduces a story mode single-player campaign to help players learn the mechanics. It released on June 28th, 2019.

Reception

Super Mario Maker 2 opened to positive reviews from critics, scoring an aggregate score of 89/100 on the day of release.[2] Nintendo Life[3] game the game very high praise, writing "this is likely to be the last 2D Mario game you’ll need," and that it's "Super Mario Maker but with more of everything that made the original so phenomenal." Reviews were almost uniformly positive, with some critiques lobbied toward the feel of using a stylus on the Nintendo Switch.[4]

Online Presence

Prior to the release, Nintendo held a tournament dubbed the Super Mario Maker 2 Invitational at E3 2019. Its finals featured YouTubers The Completionist and Abdallah competing (shown below).

On release day, Super Mario Maker 2 began trending on YouTube, following in the footsteps of its predecessor. Jacksepticeye uploaded a video of him playing the game, gaining over 169,000 views in an hour (shown below, left). YouTuber ryukhar did the same, gaining over 117,000 views (shown below, right). A release day hype-megathread posted to /r/NintendoSwitch[5] gained over 300 points.
