Witch Hat Atelier is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kamome Shirahama. The series follows a girl named Coco, who dreams of being a witch and after meeting a witch named Qifrey, Coco's dream begins to come true. An anime television series adaptation produced by Bug Films is set to premiere in 2025. The manga started in July 2016 and steadily grew an online presence and fandom over the years.

History

Witch Hat Atelier^[1] is written and illustrated by Kamome Shirahama and started in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Morning Two on July 22nd, 2016. The manga series follows the journey of Coco, the daughter of a dressmaker who aspires to become a witch; however because only innate magical users can practice and use magic, she has to give up on her dream. However, after meeting a male witch named Qifrey her life changes forever. The manga is well-received by both critics and readers.^[2][3]

Anime

On April 05th, 2022, The official website of Kodansha's^[4] Morning two magazine announced that Kamome Shirahama's Witch Hat Atelier manga is getting an anime adaptation. On July 4th, 2024, a promotional video of the anime was shared during its panel at Anime Expo^[5], revealing a 2025 premiere and visuals. The video^[6] (seen below) amassed more than 130,000 views and 8,200 likes in two weeks.

Online Presence

The manga series attracted a dedicated online fandom featuring fan art creators, debates, theories about the series' story, as well as memetic content. For example, on July 21st, 2024, X^[7] user @birdfrogdraws posted a fan art of Agott (seen below, left), amassing over 6,000 likes and 579 reposts in a day. On June 25th, 2022, X^[8] user @cykedelia uploaded a fan art based on Qifrey (seen below, right), amassing roughly 37,000 likes and 5,300 reposts in two years.
