Ta Helao refers to a reaction image of a dog wearing a jacket paired with the Argentine expression "Ta Helao," which translates to "It's freezing." The image was popularized around July 2021, often used as a meme on Facebook and Twitter posts about the weather.

Origin

The earliest example of the "ta helao" meme was posted on Facebook[1] on April 17th, 2020 by the meme page @Momosdeperritos. The image (seen below) was accompanied by the Spanish caption "Bundle up and sleep with socks on," and garnered 17 likes and 8 shares in three years.

About a year later, on July 7th, 2021, Twitter[2] user @nathanwpyle explained he is the person who took the original picture of the attired dog in New York City. The tweet (seen below) received 4,000 likes and 273 retweets in two years.

The meme became a recurring reaction image in Argentine and other Latin American countries when the winter season or cold weather hits the region. For example, on January 10th, 2022, Memedroid[3] user @El_que_te_la_mete posted a comic strip comparing a dog in Siberia in -20 Celsius weather and an Argentine dog at 8 Celsius degrees. The post (seen below) garnered 288 reactions in one year.

Fan artwork of the dog in a jacket was also posted on social media. For instance, on January 7th, 2021, Facebook[4] user @myyoupink posted a drawing inspired by the "ta helao" meme (seen below), receiving 531 likes and 195 shares in two years.
