About

3 Empanadas Para Dos Personas (English: "three empanadas for two people") is a memorable quote uttered by Argentine actor Luis Brandoni in the 1985 movie Esperando la Carroza. The quote was popularized online as a reaction image, GIF and image macro meme used to express an ironic response and lack of empathy, as the character is eating a typical Latin American food he got from a house he just visited.

Origin

On May 6th, 1985, the Argentine movie Esperando la Carroza (English: Waiting for the Hearse) was released in theaters. In one particular scene that takes place inside a car, Antonio Musicardi (played by Luis Brandoni) together with his brother Sergio (Juan Manuel Tenuta) is eating an empanada that he brought from the house he had just visited, saying the memorable phrase, "Do you know what they had to eat? Three empanadas. They broke my soul. Three empanadas that were left over from yesterday for two people." Antonio says the phrase while he eats the empanada of the poor family. The scene was uploaded on YouTube[1] by user @nicolastenaci0us44 on December 29th, 2008, garnering over 146,000 views and 693 likes in 14 years. (shown below)

Spread

One of the earliest known uses of the scene being used as a meme was published[2] on August 12th, 2016, in an image macro style format paired with the text in Spanish "What a misery, 3 empanadas for 2 people," which was uploaded to the site Meme Generator (shown below).
