"Don't think. Feel and you'll be tanasinn…"

About

Tanasinn (タナシン) is an Internet meme that originated on the 2channel. What tanasinn exactly is cannot be explained clearly, but it is frequently accompanied by a surrealistic undertones. Often characters called tanasinn are expressed by Shift JIS art of a deteriorated Doraemon. It is said that it does not have a meaning, and rather it is not something to think about, but something to be felt.

The most likely explanation is that "tanasinn" is a 2channel fad of trolling users with bizzarre images and statements as if it is some sort of religion or higher level of thinking. When users ask about the meaning of "tanasinn" on 2channel, most often they are met with a series of responses featuring cryptic, nonsensical messages and ASCII art. However, when the meaning is asked elsewhere, it has yielded an answer of "it means nothing, it's just ASCII art and Doraemon put together."

Origin

Around January 2004, one person anonymously posted bizarre Shift_JIS art of Doraemon called “tanasinn” on a news board. So with that surrealism the ambiguous art became popular, while the meaning was unknown. These surreal posts generally came to be called like “feeling [the] tanasinn”.

Etymology

The meaning of the term “tanasinn” has yet to be proven; the producers themselves also do not attach any specific meaning to the name, and the surrealism it causes means that surrealism itself is perhaps the original intention. Also, it isn’t even known if “tanashin” (タナシン?) is the correct reading.

The following is an English translation of the history of the word "tanasinn" provided by Pixiv Encyclopedia. However, the reader should note this is probably made up for the sole purpose of contributing to the "tanasinn" mystery and mythology, and not actual fact.

Tanasinn is a word that is thought to be connected to many ancient civilizations such as the Sumerians and Aztecs. A variety of interpretations such as, "creation and destruction," "truth," and "the dark cloud," have been proposed, although none are definite. In actuality, the spelling of "tanasinn" is a phonetic equivalent created by British explorer Scott Norman. It is said that the original reading is not "tanasinn," but even this term deeply affects the psyche and causality of living things.

In a 1982 experiment, it was found that continually playing "tanasinn" at a fixed frequency and interval was fatal to mice. But this remains an unsubstantiated rumour.

English explorer Scott Norman and American Psychiatric Association authority Roger Batkinson were deeply involved in tanasinn research. Scott was the one who discovered "tanasinn" at ancient Aztec ruins and continued researching it for a long time. However, one day he suddenly disappeared.

The sentence, "I got it!" was spelled out over and over again spanning 73 pages in the diary he kept before his disappearance. Roger, who was engaged in research into the psychoactive elements of "tanasinn," left a tape with the words, "there was a truth we should not have touched," and shot himself in the head with a pistol.

It is written in Mayan murals that those who have understood the truth in "tanasinn" can freely control the destruction and rebirth of all things. Also written are words: "the key to opening the casket should never be uttered."

Incidentally, the origin of this is the result of 2channel's forum "just an anonymous user" having a bunch of stuff happen and going down. There is a strong theory that it changed into a tanasinn.

Shift_JIS art

This Shift_JIS art of a deteriorated Doraemon was posted in a PC game board in a thread about Steam in 2003. It is sometimes called “Stea-emon” (スチえもん suchiemon?) for this reason.

Currently, other various types of Shift_JIS art captioned “tanasinn” are posted. They do not just stay at deteriorated Doraemon; they also infect, encroach on, and deteriorate other various pieces of Shift_JIS art and give it the distinctive look of tanasinn.
