"Video Games" is a 2023 song about gaming and video games by the comedy rock duo Tenacious D, comprised of actors Jack Black and Kyle Gass. Following its premiere in May 2023, the song saw use in memes on YouTube, TikTok and other platforms as it went viral via remixes and other edits.

Origin

On May 11th, 2023, an animated music video for Tenacious D's song "Video Games" premiered on YouTube.[1] In the video, a 3D-animated Jack Black and Kyle Gass travel through various video game worlds, including God of War, Fallout, Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario. The music video (shown below) accumulated over 16,000 views in three weeks.



Spread

Starting on May 13th, 2023, users on YouTube and TikTok posted various edits of the video, including replacement remixes and covers.

For example, on May 14th, YouTuber[2] Mr. Nut posted a version that speeds up every time Jack Black sings "games." The video (shown below, left) garnered over 839,000 views in three weeks. On May 19th, YouTuber[3] naD rM posted a version in which every lyric was accompanied by an image found on Google. The video (shown below, right) received over 1.2 million views in two weeks.



The video maintained its popularity as a source material for memes through May and early June 2023. For example, on May 26th, 2023, YouTuber[4] TheRealSullyG posted an Otomatone cover of the song that gained over 397,000 views in one week (shown below).
