About

Thanoscopter Blade is a nickname given to the double-bladed sword wielded by character Thanos in 2019 Marvel superhero film Avengers: Endgame. The nickname is a reference to Thanoscopter, a yellow helicopter piloted by Thanos in two issues on Marvel comics, which some fans hoped would make an appearance in the film.

Origin

On October 3rd, 2018, a leaked artwork of Thanos' double-bladed sword from the then-unnamed fourth Avengers film was posted in /r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers.[1] On the next day, Redditor dickcheeesebutt speculated that the weapon was a torn-off helicopter blade from Thanoscopter.[2]

Spread

On April 24th, 2019, Tumblr user posted an image of Hot Toys Thanos figurine holding the sword, writing that the weapon was the blade of the Thanoscopter.[3] On April 28th, Redditor Apophyx posted an image of the sword's 3D model, writing "Thanoscopter was in the movie, after all" (shown below, left).[4] The post gained over 1,200 upvotes in one month. On May 4th, 2019, Tumblr user joltzen-art posted a comic based on the theory, which gained over 220 likes and reblogs in one month (shown below, left).[5]

Turns out the Thanoscopter was in fact in the movie, after all THANOS THANOS MAY 2019

On May 4th, 2019, Redditor ayjayem made a post in /r/marvelstudios subreddit in which he claimed meeting Thanos creator Jim Starlin, who confirmed to him that Thanos' weapon in the film was indeed inspired by the rotor blades of Thanoscopter.[6]

In the following month, more posts referencing Thanos' double-blade sword as Thanoscopter Blade appeared online, primarily on Reddit.

Various Examples

I met Jim Starlin today and he confirmed a theory about the design of Thanos's weapon in the film I met Jim at a signing today and had him sign a copy of a Thanos # 1 variant, the 1:50 variant which has Thanos holding his weapon from Endgame on the cover. He hadn't seen that cover before and got really excited, which made my day. He pointed out the double-edged sword and asked me if I wanted to hear the backstory about how it came to be in the films since it wasn't part of his original design. Like any fanboy, of course I said yes and he told me the story. He said the writers and producers showed the design to him as a surprise and that they had indeed based it on the rotor blades from the Thanos copter. I think the designers even stumped Jim a bit as he described it as being "from a crazy issue where Spider-man fought Thanos for the Cosmic Cube in a helicopter." So, there you have it. That's the story about Thanos's double-edged sword straight from the man himself.
