About
That's How You X is an object labeling template taken from a scene from The Simpsons. It is commonly used to comment on current events and trends, noting how one, more recent event or trend executed its intended goal better than a previous, similar event or trend.
Origin
The meme originates from The Simpsons episode "The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace", which first aired on September 20th, 1998, on Fox.[1] In the scene, Homer and Bart travel to The Edison Museum to destroy one of Thomas Edison's inventions. Not long after getting in line to enter the museum, Bart exclaims "Alright, the museum is still open!", which causes the father of the child ahead of them in line to say to his son "Why don't you like Thomas Edison that much?" and smacks him on the back of the head. The scene (shown below) was posted to YouTube by Simpsons Clips on September 5th, 2018, and received over 1,900 views.
Spread
The scene began becoming an exploitable template when it was re-captioned, "Now that's how you X!" On June 3rd, 2020, an object labeling edit of the image showing the father as "2020" and the son as "2012" captioned "Now that's how you do an apocalypse!" appeared on Reddit's /r/funny,[2] gaining over 12,000 points (shown below, left). On April 25th, 2021, Redditor djdayer posted the meme in /r/joshfight[3] to show how the Josh Swain Fight was superior to the Area 51 Raid, gaining over 2,500 points (shown below, right).
