The image went viral online in late April 2024 on Reddit, being used to comment on unfair matchups humorously, similar to the Hydrogen Bomb vs. Coughing Baby meme.

On April 8th, 2023, Redditor[1] u/GodNonon posted the earliest known iteration of the "The Big Bang vs. sperm cell on a used condom" meme to compare how unfair a fight would be between The Boys' villain Homelander and One Punch Man's protagonist Saitama. The user wrote "When Hydrogen Bomb vs Coughing Baby' doesn't even cut it," amassing more than 4,800 upvotes and 134 comments in a year. (seen below)

The image grew as a popular reaction meme among fandoms on Reddit and X, former Twitter, used mainly to humorously comment on unfair powerscaling comparisons between characters. For instance, on June 15th, 2024, X[2] user @up2anth used the "The Big Bang vs. sperm cell on a used condom" meme to compare two Batman film directors (seen below), which received more than 646 likes and 58 reposts in a year.
On March 22nd, 2024, X[3] user @JimmyHL_ compared two Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation light novel volumes using the powerscaling meme (seen below), which received roughly 51 likes and 8 reposts in six months.
