The Last Image the Human Brain Creates at The Point of Death, also known as Could This Be the Face of God Himself? is a catchphrase and copypasta that is primarily used to accompany ironic and surreal memes, humorously suggesting a bizarre character is the face of God. It also has seen some use in fandoms to praise a specific character.

Origin

It is unclear where the copypasta first originated, but examples date back to the fall of 2016. One of the earliest known examples was posted to Twitter on October 13th, 2016, by user @had11n^[1] (shown below), though it received minimal engagement.

Spread

Over the following years, the template spread in surreal meme and fandom communities, as users either employed the template for ironic humor or jokey appreciation. On February 15th, 2017, a Redditor posted an example to /r/memes^[2] featuring a bizarre image of SpongeBob SquarePants, gaining over 150 points in six years (shown below, left). On March 19th, 2018, the Facebook page "Exploding Fish Shitposting & Senseless Drivel Cult by Chad Mojito"^[3] posted a Zomp meme with the caption, gaining over 620 reactions in five years (shown below, right).

More sincere examples of the meme include an April 15th, 2018, post to the New York Mets subreddit^[4] that shows the player Wilmer Flores hitting a walk-off home run, gaining over 190 points in roughly five years (shown below, left). On March 4th, 2017, Redditor Ringmaster187 used the copypasta to talk about a Funhaus cast member, gaining over 2,100 points on the /r/funhaus^[5] subreddit in six years (shown below, right).
