The Rick Friend, also known as Friends Refer to Me As Like the Rick Friend, refers to a copypasta and viral video of a guy telling his teammates in a video game that his friends call him the "Rick Friend" as in the Rick and Morty character Rick Sanchez. The guy's monologue was dubbed cringe by many, akin to negative perceptions of the worship of Sigma Males and Rick and Morty Fans who stereotypically believe that they're smarter than others.

Origin

The earliest discovered upload of a video with the "Rick Friend" audio was posted by TikToker^[1] @_memealorian on April 24th, 2024, receiving over 1.2 million plays and 155,200 likes in two months (shown below).

Multiple comments on the TikTok alleged that the original video was an Overwatch clip, although unconfirmed. Similar comments have been left on YouTube^[2] reuploads. A likely origin is a since-deleted TikTok that started a TikTok sound called "original sound – Lok" that came from a user named Lok. The sound has been removed although viral TikToks^[3] used it as early as April 29th, 2024.

Friends refer to me as like the Rick friend because, like, I'm smart and all I do is talk shit about everything 'cause it's fun. Being a hater is fun. Being badass comes at a cost though, like, it's not just fun. Being a cold person makes the world seem colder but, like, that's just something I picked up from being cold, like, myself. My other fucking nickname is beyond because of my attitude, like, my friends literally call me Sub Zero 'cause if I had to choose between people and living in the forest forever then, like, I choose the forest.

On April 29th, 2024, TikToker^[3] @rickthevillain used the audio from Lok, gaining roughly 1 million plays and 51,300 likes in two months (shown below, left). On May 5th, TikToker^[4] @duggz44 posted a video with the audio, gaining over 469,100 plays and 36,800 likes in a month (shown below, right).

During the same timeframe, the copypasta gained minor usage on Twitter / X.^[5][6] On May 13th, 2024, Redditor^[7] zaens added the copypasta to the /r/copypasta subreddit.
