About

This Is Brilliant. But I Like This a memorable quote uttered by host Jeremy Clarkson on a 2014 episode of Top Gear. Online, a screen-capture from the scene has been used in object label image macros featuring the quote to express appreciation for one thing over another.

Origin

On February 16th, 2014, episode three of season 21 of Top Gear aired. In the episode, one of the hosts Jeremy Clarkson says of the Ford Fiesta his partner Richard Hammond is driving "This is brilliant." However, he claims the Volkswagen Up! he reviewed is better, saying, "But I like this" (shown below).[1]

The earliest know object label image macro was posted on April 27th, 2018 by Redditor [2] Sh1ckDits in the /r/Animemes subreddit. That day, they posted a two-pane screen capture from the episode in which the Fiesta is labeled "Steins;Gate" and the Up! is labeled "Re:Zero" (shown below, left).

Several hours later, Redditor[3] syclum posted a version in which the Fiesta is labeled "sleep" and the Up! is labeled "Playing video games till 5am" in the /r/MemeEconomy subreddit. The post (shown below, center) received more than 22,000 points (92% upvoted) and 190 comments in 12 hours. The same post was later shared on the /r/dankmemes subreddit,[4] where it received more than 3,000 points (96% upvoted) and 50 comments in 12 hours.

Through out the next few hours, Redditors on /r/dankmemes shared versions of the meme. That day, Redditor[5] AbnormalDepression posted a version in which the Fiesta reads "other women" and the Up! reads "anime tiddies." The post (shown below, right) received more than 695 points (96% upvoted) in 12 hours.

Later that day, Redditor[6] Athuan posted a version of the meme in /r/dankmemes in which the Fiesta is labeled with a picture of the whole "This Is Brilliant. But I Like This meme and the Up! has a picture of the Drakeposting template. The post (shown below) received more than 3,500 points (97% upvoted) and 60 comments in less than six hours.
