About
This Is Not Okie Dokie is a phrase originating from the YouTube video SMG4: Doki Doki Mario Club. The phrase became a meme in 2018, often associated with an image of a glowing-eyed Mario holding a shotgun. It is frequently used as a reaction image and image macro, and the catchphrase is commonly used across social media.
Origin
On February 10th, 2018, YouTuber SMG4,[1] who is known for making YouTube Poop style videos using various Super Mario games, uploaded a video titled, "SMG4: Doki Doki Mario Club" (shown below). At 9:33 in the video, we see Mario sitting on the floor of Princess Peach's castle with his mouth glitched agape. He then speaks the words, "Stop it, this is not okie dokie," which is pieced together from various audio clips, including Michael Jordan saying, "Stop it". The video garnered over 4.3 million views in two-and-a-half years.
Shortly after the phrase became popular, it was paired with an image of a glowing-eyed Mario with an oversized mustache holding a shotgun (shown below, left). This image comes from an earlier SMG4 video titled, "SMG4: Stupid Mario World," uploaded on December 16th, 2017 (shown below, right). At 4:20 in the video, Mario is seen holding a shotgun. The glowing-eyed Mario image is an edited screenshot of this moment.
Spread
On February 15th, 2018, YouTuber DemonBoi re-uploaded the clip of Mario saying "this is not okie dokie" to their YouTube channel, gaining over 68 thousand views in over 2 years.[2] The phrase became a favorite among SMG4 fans, and started to spread from there. Eventually, it was associated with the image of Mario holding a shotgun. This format saw particular success on Reddit. On November 4th, 2019, Redditor LukeWarmPlayz[3] posted a version of the meme to referring to No Nut November on r/memes, garnering over 17.8 thousand upvotes in 11 months (shown below, left). On July 11th, 2020, Redditor Andreaskou10000[4] posted another meme using the image and phrase, garnering over 18.4 thousand likes in 2 months (shown below, right).
The phrase and meme saw a rise in popularity around September of 2020, possibly thanks to the release of Super Mario: 3D All-Stars driving more traffic to the SMG4 channel. The phrase is commonly used as a post title on Reddit, reacting to the content of the post (shown below). The phrase and image macro are used across social media as post reactions and standalone memes.
