This or That Challenge, also known as the Tricky Challenge, is a social game and internet challenge on TikTok set to the song "It's Tricky" by RUN DMC^[1] in which two options are presented at a time, one at the left and one at the right side of the screen, and the TikToker must choose which one they prefer by walking or dancing off-screen in the direction of their preference. The challenge is often performed with multiple people, who line up and walk toward their preference one at a time.

Origin

It's unknown who started the This or That Challenge, but the earliest videos following the challenge date back to at least November 11th, 2020. On that day, TikToker catherinebertholddd uploaded a video to TikTok^[2] in which she and three friends perform the challenge to a number of prompts, garnering over 3.4 million views in 3 weeks (shown below).

Spread

On November 15th, Brooke Monk uploaded a video to TikTok^[3] performing the challenge with her sisters, garnering over 31.7 million views in 2 weeks (shown below, left). On November 23rd, dolly_broadway uploaded a video^[4] performing the challenge, garnering over 32.4 million views in 1 week (shown below, right). As of December 1st, these are the two most popular videos following the trend.

On November 25th, Ethan Klein of H3H3 Productions uploaded a video to TikTok^[5] performing the challenge with Trisha Paytas, garnering over 1.5 million views in 6 days (shown below, left). On the same day, Paytas posted her own version of the challenge with Klein to her TikTok page,^[6] garnering over 1.3 million views in the same span of time (shown below, right).

As of December 1st, videos using the hashtag #thisorthat have been viewed over 755 million times. The original sound for "It's Tricky" has been used in over 2.9 million videos.
