This Ride Only Stops In An Emergency, Crying Is Not An Emergency is a disclaimer attached to some signs at amusement or theme parks. The most notable example relating to memes is a sign showing Goofy under the phrase, which went viral in 2019 as a reaction image and became the subject of image caption memes in the following years along with jokes about growing up.
Origin
The disclaimer "this ride only stops in an emergency, crying is not an emergency" has been documented a variety of times throughout the 2010s. For example, on July 26th, 2013, a 9GAG[1] user posted a photo of the disclaimer, gaining over 11,000 upvotes in nine years (shown below, left). On August 10th, 2014, Twitter[2] user @davekel shared another example of the disclaimer (shown below, right).
On May 6th, 2019, Twitter[3] user @itshannahflynn posted a photo of a sign showing Goofy underneath the phrase and Peter Pan above it, writing, "Saving this one for future use," gaining over 640 retweets and 2,300 likes in three years (shown below).
Spread
On May 9th, 2019, the Goofy disclaimer was shared to the /r/cursedimages[4] subreddit, gaining over 24,900 upvotes in three years. On September 24th, Redditor Mike_Oxlong42069 posted an image macro variant to /r/dankmemes[5] using the photo under the caption, "When you turn 18 and start life for real," gaining over 35,200 upvotes in three years (shown below). The meme received viral spread and was notably reposted by Facebook[6] page The Language Nerds in March 2021, gaining over 16,000 reactions and 2,100 shares in a year. On August 9th, 2021, Redditor FearmyBeard21 posted a similar meme reading "seconds after you turn 18" to /r/memes,[7] gaining over 90,000 upvotes in eight months. It was then reposted by Instagram[8] page jokezar the next day, gaining over 118,000 likes in a similar timeframe.
