About

"This Trip Was Truly Fun, Wasn't It" is a memorable quote uttered by the character Joseph Joestar on the Japanese anime television series JoJo's Bizzare Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. Online is an image macro used as a farewell or tribute to a deceased person or lost item.

Origin

On June 19th, 2015, the episode of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders entitled "Long Journey Farewell, My Friends" aired in Japan.[1] During the episode, the character Joseph's soul appears before the character Jotaro (voiced by Unshô Ishizuka and Daisuke Ono) and offers him advice for his fight against his enemy. Before leaving, the spirit says, "This trip was truly fun, wasn't it?" That day, YouTuber ultimaT published the clip, receiving more than 2.3 million views (shown below).

Spread

Months after the episode premiered, on September 8th, 2015, Tumblr [2] user princesskujo posted a screenshot from the scene in a review of the episode (shown below).

On September 15th, 2019, iFunny [3] user HellsingFan published the image as a reaction to the caption, "When you go on a journey to save your daughter, but you get into life and death situations, half your friends die, and then you fucking die." The post received more than 100 reactions in less than two years (shown below, left).

Several months later, on November 16th, Redditor L0RDCH13F365 posted a variation of the meme in the /r/ShitPostCrusaders[4] subreddit. They captioned the image, "Users who got banned by using white bar memes." The post received more than 6,000 points (98% upvoted) in less than two years (shown below, right).

As the meme spread, people began editing the image, creating different variations and situations for the characters to react to. For example, on December 7th, 2019, Redditor LordofCringe69 posted a variation in the /r/ShitPostCrusaders[5] of a character responding to a variation of the scene by mistaking the spirit for Conan O'Brien (shown below, right).
