About
Tony Use to Eat Cheeseburgers refers to an exploitable image macro of Happy Hogan (played by Jon Favreau) captioned with the phrase "Tony use to eat cheeseburgers." Posted as a part of a fan-made exchange between Marvel characters, the macro has since found use as an ironic shitpost, used to replace panels in unrelated memes in a non-sequitur fashion.
Origin
On July 5th, 2019, fan Marvel account marvelous.pics posted a six-panel image depicting an exchange between Happy Hogan and three other characters, with Happy diverting every dialogue to Tony Stark. In the second panel of the image, captioned with a typo, Happy, replying to Morgan Stark, remembers that Tony Stark used to love them. The post gained over 96,100 likes on Instagram[1] in two years (shown below).
Spread
On July 7th, 2019, Redditor superelbarto2K posted the image to the /r/4PanelCringe[2] subreddit, where it gained 390 upvotes in six months.
On July 21st, 2019, Redditor burflemerfle posted the first ironic edit of the image to the /r/okbuddyretard[3] subreddit, where it gained 16 upvotes in six months (authorship unconfirmed; shown below). The image was actively circulated online in the following weeks.
On July 21st, 2019, an unknown Redditor posted the first derivative meme, combining the caption with a Naruto panel and a Nice Cock meme (shown below, left). The post gained over 100 upvotes in /r/okbuddyretard[4] in six months. Another meme, posted by Redditor scorchcakes75 on August 8th, gained over 430 upvotes in the same period (shown below, right).
The panel was used to create ironic versions of other cringy images in the following months.
In December 2021, the panel saw a resurgence online following the release of the Marvel film Spider-Man: No Way Home. For example, on December 28th, 2021, the popular meme account @TheFunny_mp4 tweeted[5] the original edit of the image, with the post gaining over 5,200 retweets and 82,800 likes in two days.
