About

The Twitter Cutting Game is a variant of the Twitter Strip Game in which a character wears a plain white shirt with drawn lines delimiting goals, in the form of numbers of likes and retweets; each time a goal is reached, the character is drawn again, with their shirt cut at the corresponding line. Although technically existing since February 2023, this art trend only became popular in February 2025.

Precursor

The original form of the Twitter stripping game comes from Twitter artist Scott Malik (alias Scott Malin), back in June 2021 (see picture below, left) . The concept of that challenge was that the artist draws a first picture of a character, then must draw them again without a piece of clothing determined by a voting poll, and so on for several turns, usually until the all clothing items are gone. The later version of that game, and the most popular one, consists of drawing the character again with less clothes – or a skimpier outfit – after a set goal of likes and retweets has been reached on the previous tweet, and so on until the character's naked or the latest goal isn't reached (see examples below, middle and right).

The earliest occurence of a Twitter strip game in which, in place of clothes being removed, a shirt is cut step by step, goes back to February 7th, 2023, and is the creation of Zesty Marmelade, featuring one of her OCs, the anthropomorphic bat Belfry (see below). In the first tweet[1] of this art challenge, Belfry wears nothing but a large, plain white shirt marked with three horizontal dotted lines, each labeled with their respective retweet count goals. This tweet only encountered moderate success, with over 820 likes and 330 retweets in 2 years.

Earliest occurence of a Twitter strip game consisting of a shirt being cut step by step, posted by A Very Zesty Marmalade on February 7th, 2023, and featuring their OC Belfry.

Exactly 2 years later, on February 7th, 2025, Twitter artist Moshie (@MoshieDraws) posted the first picture of another Twitter strip game, in which the portrayed character is the Vtuber Shylily. In this picture (see below), she wears a plain white shirt, with six horizontal dotted lines, corresponding to three like count goals and three retweet count goals. This tweet was significantly popular, gathering within 20 days over 120,000 likes and 9,000 retweets, far more than any of the planned goals; it also seems to be at the origin of the viral trend of this form of art challenge.
