About
Using The Scale Provided, Rate How Much You Like X is a snowclone phrasal template used in a scaled format to determine a person's likeability over popular themes, such as characters, food, artists and politicians. The most popular usage of the phrase is Using The Scale Provided, Rate How Much You Like Kids which utilizes controversial public figures to determine a person who really likes kids and someone that hates them. The meme started in 2017 on Reddit, spreading to other social media platforms over the next few years.
Origin
On April 21st, 2017, an unknown Redditor[1] uploaded on the r/funny channel an image of a 0 to 10 scale paired with the overlay text "Using The Scale Provided, Rate How Much You Like Kids." At the lowest point of the scale, a picture of Casey Anthony represents someone that hates kids, as she was accused of killing her kid in October 2008. The highest point of the scale features a picture of former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle, who was investigated by federal authorities for the existence of child pornography at his residence in July 2015. The meme (shown below) garnered over 710 upvotes and 66 comments in six years.
Spread
In the following years, the image macro was used to mock celebrities and famous personalities known for either hating children or being involved in cases related to sexual assault against minors or child pornography. For example, on January 8th, 2020, IFunny [2] user @TheOnlyBooman_2014 uploaded the image featuring a picture of Nicole Engler, a mother who accidentally killed[3] her toddler daughter by leaving her in her car on a hot day, and a picture of American singer Michael Jackson, who was notoriously accused of sexually molesting children on two separate occasions. The post (shown below) garnered roughly 6 reactions and two comments in three years.
The scale image macro has also been used for other subjects. For example, on August 2022, an anonymous user uploaded an image on Imgflip[4] featuring the United States president Joe Biden and Adolf Hitler paired with the overlay text "using the scale provided, how good are you at giving speeches." The post (shown below) received over 710 views and 63 upvotes in a year.
