Wide Dog

Wide Dog refers to two separate images of obese dogs used in memes, sometimes with the premise of the dog being shy, embarrassed and/or bullied about its weight.

Origin

On September 15th, 2018, Facebook ^[1] posted an image of a large white dog in the Dogspotting Facebook group with the caption "Thicc sadboi in Brussels I saw just over a month ago. 😞 so precious. so round." The post received more than 21,000 reactions, 500 shares and 500 comments (shown below).

In the following months, the image was posted by several subreddits, with November 9th, 2018, post to /r/AbsoluteUnits gaining over 1,200 upvotes.^[2] On January 16th, 2019, Instagram user bearboob used the edited image in post parodying a news headline, captioned "Wide dog gets somehow wider, seeks help from God" (shown below). The post gained over 32,500 likes in four months.^[3]

Spread

In the following days, bearboob's post was multiple times reposted on Instagram,^[4] Reddit^[5] and other sites. For example, on January 16th, Reddit user that_one_guy_reese posted the image to /r/comedyheaven subreddit where it gained over 15,300 upvotes in four months.^[6]

On February 20th, 2019, bearboob created another meme featuring an edited photograph of another dog, taken from April 29th, 2016, news article,^[7] with the post imitating a YouTube top 10 list (shown below, left and right).^[8] The image gained over 50,800 likes in three months.

On February 27th, 2019, YouTube user caeseyy uploaded a YouTube video "top 10 reasons why i hate wide dog" based on the post, with YouTube user Wide Dog later commenting "aw come on man it's my birthday".^[9][10]

In the following months, more memes using the images of the animals appeared online, primarily on Instagram, with Bearboob continuing to post memes about Wide Dog.
