Yellow Emoji Typing or Yellow M&M Typing refers to an exploitable video of a 3D-modeled smiley-face character typing at an old computer. The video and screenshots from it became the increased subject of memes in 2021, particularly on Instagram, Twitter / X and TikTok, often accompanied by absurd text that the emoji is implied to be typing.

Origin

Although the exact origin of the Yellow M&M Typing image is unclear, one of the earliest appearances online was posted on X^[1] by @reactjpg (shown below, left) on June 16th, 2021. The image is paired with the text "To whomever it may concern, my nuts hang," amassing roughly 315 likes and 69 retweets in two years. A day later, on June 17th, the same X^[2] page posted a version of the meme using the Yellow Emoji Typing image (shown below, right), which amassed more than 30 likes and 5 retweets in two years.

On July 27th, 2021, YouTube^[3] user @NoodleErik uploaded the original video used in the Yellow Emoji Typing meme (shown below), which received 1,200 views and 69 likes in two years.

Spread

The meme became a popular reaction image on social. often accompanied by absurd and funny texts. For instance, on October 13th, 2023, TikTok^[4] user @memesyoulike.1 posted the Yellow Emoji Typing as if they were trying to write a message but kept erasing and rephrasing its meaning. The post (shown below, left) amassed roughly 683 plays and 30 likes in two weeks. On October 16th, TikTok^[5] user @allisonidk6 shared the video paired with a series of indecent – almost sent – messages (shown below, right), which garnered over 11,000 plays and 2,100 likes in two weeks.
