Yo Mama Jokes But The Punchline Is Always Xbox Live Or Super Bowl is a subversion of the Yo Mama YouTube series hosted by Brody Foxx in which the punchline of every your mom joke is either Brody yelling "Xbox Live" or "Super Bowl." The trend started on YouTube and spread to other social media sites like TikTok and Instagram in 2022, acting as a form of bait-and-switch media.
Origin
On February 10th, 2020, YouTuber[1] Bumbus posted a video titled, "Yo Momma without the punchline," in which there was silence following every joke. Over the course of two years, the video received roughly 53,900 views (shown below, left). On April 18th, 2021, YouTuber[2] GuyGavin posted a video titled, "yo mama jokes but the punchlines are just 'she freaking died,'" in which every punchline was the same. The video received roughly 39,100 views over the course of one year (shown below, right).
On December 16th, 2021, the verified YouTube[3] channel of Yo Mama posted a video titled, "Yo Mama Jokes but the Punchline is Always Xbox Live," earning roughly 261,900 views over the course of nine months (shown below, left). Additionally, the original Yo Mama YouTube[4] video with the "Xbox Live" punchline was posted on July 31st, 2011, earning roughly 2.5 million views in 11 years (shown below, right).
Spread
On January 1st, 2022, YouTuber[5] dieaster posted a moldy video template, earning roughly 114,500 views in nine months (shown below, left). On April 18th, 2022, YouTuber[6] dangerousvirus.mp4 posted an even moldier version and vocoded the audio to sirens. The video received roughly 217,000 views in four months (shown below, right).
"Super Bowl" Punchline
On February 4th, 2022, YouTuber[7] AQ206 posted a video in which every Yo Mama punchline was replaced with "Super Bowl!" Over the course of six months, the video received roughly 30,000 views (shown below, left). The original Yo Mama "Super Bowl" YouTube[8] video was uploaded on February 5th, 2012, earning roughly 1 million views in ten years (shown below, right).
Spread to TikTok
In July 2022, the "Xbox Live" and "Super Bowl" punchlines were used on TikTok. For instance, on July 6th, 2022, TikToker[9] and Twitch streamer StanleyMOV posted his reaction to watching dangerousvirus.mp4's YouTube video, earning roughly 1.1 million plays and 141,700 likes in two months (shown below, left). On August 7th, 2022, TikToker[10] enjiwenji posted a "Bro Tip" video that turned uncanny and creepy, ultimately ending in an "Xbox Live" punchline. Over the course of four weeks, the video received roughly 837,800 plays and 211,000 likes (shown below, right).
