You Are an Idiot, not to be confused with the grammatically incorrect quote "You, sir, are and idiot", is a troll-baiting website featuring three smiley faces, a strobing background and the text "YOU ARE AN IDIOT" written in large typeface, set to the background music of a choir singing the phrase on loop. In addition to its widespread use as bait, the audio file from the website has been also sampled in a number of audio-video remixes.

Origin

The website, which consists of an Adobe Flash video, was originally hosted under the domain YouDontKnowWhoIAm.org, which has been since turned into a pornography portal. The authorship of the website is unknown.^[1] The website's most current domain, YouAreAnIdiot.com, is registered to an individual named Andrew Regner according to Whois.^[2] As demonstrated below, the previous version of the site contained a malicious script that would cause the browser window to duplicate so quickly that it was nearly impossible to close it; however, the site was cleared of the virus in 2013.

Spread

YouAreAnIdiot is often used in remixes. In September 2006 a video called You are an idiot! by Oniku1234 was posted on YouTube, featuring an animated techno remix of the song (below left). As of September 2015, the video has 1.1 million views. In 2014 Joel from Vinesauce also mentioned the site on Livestream, causing a rebound in popularity (below right). There are about 795,000 search results on YouTube for "You Are an Idiot", including many popular remixes
