About
You, Artist! is a Twitter meme trend that uses the "You, Higher Mammal" meme to ask artists on Twitter a question about their work, or asks artists to show a specific type of artwork, such as fan art of a character from an anime, videogame, or cartoon.
Origin
The trend started in March of 2023. The earliest known notable post was from Twitter user EndoverEndy on March 11th, who asked artists "WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING IN YOUR ART PROCESS".[1] The tweet (shown below) received over 2,700 likes and over 3,800 quote retweets in over one month.
Spread
Over the following weeks, the "Higher Mammal" meme was widely reposted as users posted several more prompts to artists on Twitter. For example, on April 17th, 2023, user @profundezaa[2] posted the prompt asking for Adventure Time art, gaining over 440 retweets, 800 quote-tweets, and 3,800 likes in ten days (shown below, left). On April 16th, user @Vingu1k[3] posted a prompt for animators to post their favorite animations, gaining over 1,300 retweets, 4,500 quote-tweets, and 9,000 likes (shown below, right).
As the meme began to saturate Twitter, some users posted anti-meme variations of the prompt. For example, on April 16th, user @EiiArt[4] posted an example of the penguin attempting to do the prompt but struggling because they'd removed its mouth, gaining over 1,800 retweets and 19,000 likes in ten days (shown below, left). On the 15th, user @meichelr[5] posted a joke telling artists to "Draw" a gun, gaining over 350 retweets and 1,500 likes (shown below, right).
