You Have Been Toyota Corrolled refers to a 1986 Venezuelan commercial for the Toyota Corolla car that gained popularity in 2020 as a meme and form of bait-and-switch media. Similar to Get Stick Bugged Lol and similar memes, the video is usually cut to unexpectedly during what appears to be adult content or other media.

Origin

In 1986, a one-minute commercial for Toyota Corolla, created by Venezuelan company ARS Publicidad and composed by Guillermo Carrasco, first aired in Venezuela. In the ad, a Toyota Corolla bursts through several banners and traverses various terrain. On February 7th, 2017, YouTube[1] user Alex I Parra Cardozo uploaded the video to YouTube, where it received over 4.3 million views in seven years (shown below).

While the exact first instance of the video being used as bait-and-switch media is unknown, the earliest discovered upload was made by iFunny[2] user Skyla_Wolf on August 5th, 2020, and received over 170 smiles on the platform in four years. In the video, a frame from an adult animation unexpectedly switches to the commercial (shown below).

In August 2020, the bait-and-switch meme was widely shared online, including multiple reposts on YouTube,[3] iFunny,[4] 9GAG[5] and Facebook.[6]

In the following years, the car commercial saw more use as it was used as a punchline in various bait-and-switch videos. For example, on November 4th, 2021, Redditor thatoneannoyingmf posted one such edit to the /r/dankmemes[7] subreddit, where it garnered over 10,000 upvotes in two years (shown below).
